Plan around your own program’s teaching and assessment dates, not a single “Canadian academic year”. Fall and winter terms are common, but start dates, reading breaks, full-year courses, summer study and co-op sequences can change what your year looks like.
The most useful date is often the first possible exam date. If teaching ends just before it, waiting for study leave means leaving yourself almost no time to practise. Build review into the teaching weeks and adjust the plan once your individual exam timetable appears.
Start with the right 2026/27 calendar
These are published examples, checked on 11 October 2026. The exam ranges are periods in which assessments may be scheduled, not your personal timetable. Faculty and program exceptions can apply.

Even within the same city, a different campus or program can use another schedule. Toronto Scarborough lists winter S-session classes from 11 January to 12 April 2027. Do not substitute the dates for another Toronto division.
Save the official calendar link with your plan. Add course deadlines from the syllabus separately; a central calendar does not list every lab report, presentation or midterm.
Count the actual days before examinations
McMaster’s fall classes finish on 10 December 2026, with exams beginning on 11 December. Queen’s Arts and Science has one pre-examination study day on 9 December. McGill has two study days, 5 and 6 December. UBC’s main fall classes end on 7 December before its 11 December exam start.
Use that gap for final checks, practice and rest. Do the first pass through difficult material earlier. Our Canadian exam guide explains how assessment weights and course requirements affect your priorities.
An example plan for a course with a December final:
- After each teaching week, attempt a question on the material without looking at the answer.
- Keep a short list of errors: an unclear definition, a missing calculation step or an argument you cannot support.
- Return to those errors in later weeks, alongside current assignments.
- When the exam timetable is released, schedule practice around your actual papers and other commitments.
If an essay and a lab report are due just before exams, reserve their work time now. “Revise everything after the last class” is not a workable plan for that week.
Use reading week for the gaps that matter
The breaks do not fall on one national date. In winter 2027, UBC’s main midterm break and Queen’s Arts and Science reading break run from 15 to 19 February. McMaster’s recess runs from 15 to 21 February. McGill’s reading break is 1 to 5 March, with some exceptions.
For fall 2026, Waterloo’s date list gives 10 to 18 October for reading week, while UBC’s main midterm break is 9 to 11 November. A friend’s reading-week plan may therefore be a poor guide to your own timetable.
Before your break, identify the next assessed task in each course. Give priority to a gap that blocks that work, such as integration techniques needed for the next problem set. Then choose a task you can finish: solve a small set of problems, draft an essay outline, or turn an unclear topic into questions you can answer.
Include time off. A reading break is an opportunity to rebalance the term, not a requirement to spend every day catching up. If your program has no break, arrange smaller review blocks around existing commitments; do not assume neighbouring teaching days are free.
Quebec calendars need their own check
Université de Montréal uses trimestre d’automne, trimestre d’hiver and trimestre d’été. Its 2026/27 central calendar lists 1 September to 23 December for autumn and 7 January to 30 April for winter, with faculty exceptions. The summer calendar distinguishes intensive and regular sessions.
Its periods of activités libres apply only in some units: 19 to 25 October and 1 to 7 March. Check your faculty calendar and personal timetable before treating either as a free week. McGill’s dates are different, so “Montreal universities” is not a single schedule.
Put co-op recruitment into the study plan
Waterloo Engineering’s sequences distinguish stream 4, whose first work term begins in January of first year, from stream 8, whose first begins in May. Later patterns vary by program and are not always a strict study/work alternation. Systems Design Engineering moves to stream 8 for entrants from fall 2026.
Copy your own sequence before planning travel, housing or summer courses. Mark application preparation and interview time alongside academic deadlines. For a stream 4 student, the first fall term includes preparing for a work term soon after December assessments.
A work term can also carry academic or professional-development requirements. Check the current requirements for your program instead of treating the block as either a holiday or ordinary coursework. Our first-year engineering guide covers the transition to that timetable.
Deferred assessments can overlap the next term
Deferral is an approved arrangement, not simply a date you choose. Once approved, add its preparation to your plan immediately.
McMaster’s published fall deferred period is 16 to 19 February 2027, and its winter deferred period is 21 to 24 June. Queen’s Arts and Science lists tentative fall deferred assessments on 7 to 10 January. Confirm the individual arrangement before relying on these dates.
This is why the winter holiday is not automatically clear of study for everyone. Full-year courses, deferred work and projects may continue. Discuss an unmanageable overlap with your academic adviser; see Canadian course-load planning for related considerations.
Plan projects and summer study separately
A thesis deadline is not necessarily immediately before April exams. UBC’s calendar lists 11 March 2027 for graduating essays and theses in most bachelor’s programs, while course and departmental milestones still need checking. Work backwards from the actual submission date to allow for feedback, revisions and any required approvals.
Summer study may be compressed, or it may be a full study term in a co-op sequence. McMaster, for example, lists a spring session from 3 May to 18 June 2027 and a summer session from 28 June to 13 August, with final exams arranged by the instructor during class time. Check the hours and assessments before combining a course with full-time work.
Make one usable weekly plan
Keep the calendar as a reference. Your weekly plan should show the work you will actually do:

At the end of the week, carry forward unfinished work deliberately. If the same task keeps moving, reduce its scope or seek help. A study schedule should reflect available time, not merely list everything you hope to finish.
