Planning your study around the Canadian academic year

Short answer first: the Canadian university year is two terms of twelve or thirteen weeks, each with its own exam period. Fall term starts the day after Labour Day and ends with exams that finish before Christmas. Winter term starts in the first full week of January and ends with exams in April. There is a reading week in February and, at many universities, a shorter break in October or November. A spring and summer term runs from May to August for those who want it, and at co-op universities a four-month work term takes the place of a study term. The dates differ enough between universities that a plan copied from a friend elsewhere will be wrong by a week or two.

Every date below comes from a published 2026/27 page at the university named. Check your own faculty's sessional dates before you write anything in a diary, because faculties within a university can differ, and some of the deferred exam dates are marked tentative.

What does the two-term year look like?

Take UBC, McMaster and Queen's as the worked examples, because they start on the same day and their calendars are close.

• UBC Vancouver. Imagine UBC, the first-day orientation, and Winter Session Term 1 both start on Tuesday 8 September 2026. The university is closed for Thanksgiving on 12 October, there is a Term 1 midterm break from 9 to 11 November around Remembrance Day, and the last day of classes is Monday 7 December. December exams run from 11 to 22 December. Term 2 starts on Tuesday 5 January 2027, the midterm break is 15 to 19 February, the last day of classes is Monday 12 April, and April exams run 16 to 27 April. Summer Session Term 1 starts on 10 May.
• McMaster. Classes begin on Tuesday 8 September in a fall term the sessional dates count at 62 days. The mid-term recess is 12 to 18 October, a test and examination restriction runs 4 to 10 December, classes end on Thursday 10 December and final exams run from 11 to 23 December. The winter term begins on Monday 4 January 2027, the recess is 15 to 21 February, classes end on 7 April and exams run 9 to 22 April. Deferred exams sit 16 to 19 February and 21 to 24 June.
• Queen's, Arts and Science. Labour Day is 7 September and classes begin on 8 September. The Fall Term Reading Break is 12 to 16 October and includes Thanksgiving. Classes end on 8 December, 9 December is a pre-examination study day, and exams run from 10 to 23 December. Winter classes begin on 4 January, the Winter Term Reading Break is 15 to 19 February and includes Family Day, classes end on 5 April, 6 to 8 April are study days, and exams run 9 to 23 April.

The gap before the exams

The number to write down from your own calendar is the gap between the last class and the first exam. Waterloo's important dates page says that "there are one or two study days each term, between the end of the Formal Lecture Period and the beginning of the Final Examination Period": Wednesday 9 December 2026 in the fall, and 13 to 14 April 2027 in the winter. Queen's gives one day in December and three in April. McMaster's classes end on a Thursday and exams start on the Friday. UBC gives four days, from 7 to 11 December. McGill's classes end on Friday 4 December and exams begin on Monday 7 December.

That is not a revision period. It is a final check. The revision has to run through the teaching weeks or not at all, and the way to do that is in how Canadian university exams actually work.

How is McGill different?

It starts a week before everyone else. Fall classes begin on Monday 31 August 2026, a Fall Reading Break runs from Friday 9 October to Wednesday 14 October inclusive, classes end on Friday 4 December and exams run from Monday 7 December to Tuesday 22 December. Winter classes begin on Tuesday 5 January 2027, the winter reading break is 1 to 5 March rather than February, classes end on Wednesday 14 April and exams run from Friday 16 April to Friday 30 April. Deferred December exams are written during the winter study break, and deferred April exams in the third week of August, which is a reason to keep the first week of March and the third week of August clear until you know you do not need them.

What is a Quebec trimester?

The same shape with a different name and a longer summer term. Université de Montréal's calendar runs a trimestre d'automne from 1 September to 23 December 2026, a trimestre d'hiver from 7 January to 30 April 2027 and a trimestre d'été from 3 May to 13 August 2027. There is a "période d'activités libres dans certaines unités", a free-activity week in some units, from 19 to 25 October and from 1 to 7 March. The calendar also says that some faculties keep their own schedules, so a UdeM student checks the faculty page, not just the registrar's.

Quebec students usually arrive from CEGEP at 19 into a three-year degree, so the year count is different even though the term shape is not. That side of it is in from high school to first year in Canada.

How does co-op change the year?

At Waterloo a co-op degree is a sequence of four-month study terms and four-month work terms, and the sequence is set by your program. In engineering, stream 4 means your first co-op work term is in January of your first year, and stream 8 means it is in May of your first year. Architectural, Electrical, Environmental and Geological Engineering are stream 4. Biomedical, Civil, Management, Nanotechnology and Software Engineering are stream 8, and Systems Design moves to stream 8 for students starting in fall 2026 or later. Chemical, Computer, Mechanical and Mechatronics students are "assigned into either stream 4 or stream 8 in the summer before your first year". After the first work term you typically alternate every four months between school and work, and in the school term before the first work term you take a professional development course.

Two things follow for planning. A stream 4 student has one study term, September to December, before the first job search and the first work term, so the fall is both a first term and an application season. And a work term in the summer means the spring term at Waterloo, which runs from 10 May to exams on 9 to 21 August 2027, is not a study term for you. The year has no long vacation; it has a different kind of term.

Where do the reading weeks fall?

In February, in the week of Family Day, at most of the country. UBC's Term 2 midterm break and Queen's Winter Term Reading Break are 15 to 19 February 2027, McMaster's mid-term recess and Waterloo's reading week run from 15 to 21 February, and Toronto Scarborough's is 13 to 19 February. McGill is the outlier at 1 to 5 March.

Fall breaks are newer and less uniform. McGill's Fall Reading Break is 9 to 14 October 2026. Waterloo's fall reading week is 10 to 18 October. McMaster's mid-term recess and Queen's Fall Term Reading Break both take the week of Thanksgiving, 12 to 18 October at McMaster and 12 to 16 October at Queen's. UBC's Term 1 midterm break is three days, 9 to 11 November, around Remembrance Day. Toronto Scarborough's fall reading week is 26 to 30 October.

How to use it

A reading week is the most valuable week of the term, because it lands five or six weeks in. That is late enough to see the shape of a course and early enough to repair a gap cheaply. Midterms cluster on either side of it.

1. List every lecture you never went back over and process those notes first.
2. Name the two courses you are furthest behind in.
3. Build your first set of flashcards from those two courses only.
4. Leave the courses that are going well alone.

If your university has no fall break, take the week of Thanksgiving and treat the Monday and the weekend as one anyway.

What happens in the summer?

A third term, for those who want it, from May to August. UBC's Summer Session Term 1 runs from 10 May to 17 June 2027 with exams 21 to 25 June, and Term 2 from 5 July to 12 August with exams 16 to 20 August. McMaster's spring session runs 3 May to 18 June and its summer session 28 June to 13 August, with finals "as arranged by instructor in class time". Queen's runs six-week terms from 10 May and 5 July and a twelve-week term from 10 May to 4 August. Waterloo's spring term is a full term, with classes from 10 May and exams from 9 to 21 August, because co-op sequences put whole cohorts in class over the summer.

Summer courses are compressed. A six-week course covers the same material as a twelve-week one, so the weekly processing that keeps you level in the fall has to happen twice as fast.

What does the year look like, week by week?

A plan built on the dates rather than on good intentions.

1. Week one, 8 September. Set up once. Every syllabus, every weight, every due date, the exam periods, the reading weeks, the drop deadlines, all on one page. Then start the habit of processing each lecture within a day, while the term is quiet enough for it to stick. Ask each instructor about recording in the first class.
2. Week six, mid-October. Stop and audit, around Thanksgiving. Which courses have you processed every week, and which have you been carrying? Write the answer down. The first midterms are here, and this is the last week where a gap is cheap.
3. The reading week. Consolidation, not holiday and not revision. Close the gaps in the two weakest courses, make the first flashcards, and leave the rest alone.
4. The last three weeks of classes. Assignments cluster here, and at Waterloo and McMaster the rules push the last big tests into this window or just before it. Protect the assignments, because term marks are banked without an exam hall. Move from writing questions to answering them, on a widening schedule. That is spaced repetition, and it is what makes a one-day study gap survivable.
5. The study days and the exam period. Timed past exams, not rereading. Most December periods end on 22 or 23 December, so the last exam can fall the day before you travel.
6. The winter break. A real break at every university in the table, because nothing is examined in January. Two things are worth doing in it: write down what went badly in December while you remember, and read the winter syllabi before 4 or 5 January.
7. January. Winter term starts within two weeks of the last December exam, on 4 or 5 January at McMaster, Queen's, UBC and McGill. Build it on your own record of what went badly, not on a mark you do not have yet.
8. February to April. Count the weeks from reading week to the first April exam. At McMaster and Queen's it is seven, at McGill six. Work back with the plan in the exams article.
9. May to August. A summer term, a work term, or a job. Decide early, because summer registration opens long before the winter exams: Queen's Arts and Science opens it on 1 February 2027.
