How to take notes in lectures, tutorials, seminars and labs

Short answer first. A lecture note captures structure, because one person is delivering an argument and you need its shape. A tutorial note captures what other people said, because the corrections are the content. A seminar note captures the objections to your own position. A lab note records what you actually did, written at the bench as you do it.

Same module, four different jobs. Almost all advice about note taking assumes a lecture theatre, and that is often not the room where the marks are decided.

What does a week in an Irish module actually look like?

Your timetable is not one format repeated. It is a set of rooms with different rules.

  • Lectures. The University of Limerick says a module is taught "based on lectures, supported by tutorials or labs". A UL lecture is normally two hours.
  • Tutorials. UL calls a tutorial "a group discussion lasting one or two hours", and says a typical group "might contain ten to fifteen students".
  • Labs. Trinity tells science students they will "attend about 12 hours of lectures and 12 hours of laboratory work per week for 24 weeks".
  • The hours nobody timetables. Trinity adds that "the same time again will be needed to read, to write up practical classes, and to study alone".

Open your timetable and count the contact hours that are not lectures. That number is how much of your note taking currently has no method behind it.

Lectures: what do you write when you cannot write everything?

University of Galway's academic skills guidance starts before you arrive. If the lecturer posts slides on Canvas in advance, review them beforehand. Then you already have the headings, and the two hours are free for what is not on them.

Decide before the lecture starts what you are writing down.

  • The skeleton. The sections, and the question each section answers.
  • Anything said out loud that is not on the slide. The asides, the qualifications and the reasoning between two bullet points exist nowhere else.
  • Worked examples in full. Including the steps that look obvious while you are watching them.
  • A mark in the margin for anything you did not follow. It keeps you moving instead of stalling on one line.

Galway tells students to develop a technique that works for them and to expect to experiment. Layout matters less than what you do afterwards. Go back over the page the same day and turn it into questions, which is the whole argument behind the Cornell method.

Tutorials: why is the note mostly other people's words?

Galway's instruction for tutorials is short. "Come prepared to your tutorials. This means completing any assigned reading or homework and bringing it along for discussion and review."

Preparing does not mean summarising the reading. It means arriving with the questions the reading left you with, so you have something to say in the first ten minutes rather than the last two.

Then stop transcribing the tutor. A tutorial is not a small lecture, and writing it as one gives you a worse copy of a note you already own. Write these instead.

  • The question, in the words it was asked in. The wording is half of what is being taught.
  • The answer that was wrong, and the sentence that fixed it. A wrong answer corrected in front of you shows the boundary of the concept.
  • The phrasing the tutor accepted. Not the idea, the phrasing.
  • Anything a classmate said that you would not have thought of. It is gone by the next day if you do not write it down.
  • Anything about the assignment, word for word, with the date beside it. In week ten, when your memory of the brief and the brief itself disagree, you want the sentence rather than the gist.

Talking counts too. UCC's assessment policy sets a floor on how small a graded element can be, then names one exception to it: "except in the case of participation". So participation exists as a graded element, and it is usually small. Bring two written questions and use one of them.

Seminars: what do you write when the position is yours?

Trinity's law school keeps seminars deliberately small. Its undergraduate FAQ says all seminars, on every programme, "will only have 15-18 students enrolled", where a first or second year lecture can hold around 170. Fifteen people around a table is not a room you can sit quietly in. In a lecture you receive a position. In a seminar you hold one.

  1. Before. Write one page: your claim, the evidence for it, and the weakest link in the chain. Naming the weak link yourself is the point of the exercise.
  2. During. Record other people's objections in their words, not your paraphrase.
  3. At the top of the page. Put the objection you could not answer on the spot, and circle it. That is the counterargument section of your essay, handed to you by someone trying to disagree with you.
  4. Afterwards. Rewrite the claim so it survives the objections. If it cannot be rewritten, you have learned more than a tidy page would have taught you.

Labs: what does the assessed notebook have to contain?

A lab is the one format where the note records an event rather than an idea, and where marks attach to it directly.

Trinity's handbook for first year chemical sciences shows how directly. A chemistry module there is examined by in-course assessment and a three hour paper, and a student needs at least 35% in the examination component and 40% in the laboratory component to pass. Falling short in either "leads to a Qualified Fail and requires reassessment examination or a repeat of the year".

The notebook itself is often the assessed object. In the physics practicals in the same handbook, students "are required to record all data and information related to their experiments in a hardback practical laboratory notebook, which is assessed", and the reports and notebooks "must include and require a documented complete data analysis, description and concise report of the outcomes of the experiment".

The report that follows has a standard shape, and your department will hand you its own version: title, abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion, references and appendices. The method has to be reproducible, so it is written in order and in the past tense. The results section presents the data and the discussion interprets it.

Read that backwards and you get the method for the bench note. Run three columns.

  1. What the instructions say to do. Copy it before you start.
  2. What you actually did. Deviations, substituted reagents, the instrument that needed recalibrating, written in as they happen.
  3. What you observed, with units and times. Full sentences for anything odd, not just a number.

Column two is the one everybody skips and the one the report needs, because the method section has to describe the experiment that happened rather than the one that was planned. Column three is where your discussion comes from, and the anomaly that is obvious at the bench on Tuesday is gone by Sunday.

Do not tidy as you go. A crossed-out reading with the corrected one beside it is a better record than a clean page.

Can you record any of it?

At every university below, the lecturer decides, and you have to ask first.

UCC's policy is the pattern. Where teaching is not already being recorded by a university system, students "may request advance permission from teaching staff to record teaching", and that request "must be made in writing to staff before commencing recording". Covert recording is "strictly prohibited", and the recording is for "studying, revising, and exam preparation purposes" only.

Where a recording device is granted as a reasonable accommodation, the conditions are stricter and you sign them. UCD's code of practice for students with a disability recommends a recording device to ensure full access to lecture content, and then binds the student to four things.

  1. Personal use only. Recordings must be for your own use and for completing the course you are registered for.
  2. No sharing, ever. They must not be shared with any third party under any circumstances, including copying, lending, or otherwise making them available to the public.
  3. Keep them secure. You must take the necessary precautions to secure your recordings against unlawful usage by another person.
  4. Breaches are disciplinary. A breach of those conditions is a breach of UCD's disciplinary regulations and goes before the Registrar or a nominee under the UCD Student Code.

Policies differ between institutions, so read your own before you press record. What they have in common is covered in what the recording rules actually say.

The practical consequence is that recording suits a lecture and almost nothing else. In a lecture, one person is speaking and the material is theirs to give you. In a tutorial you would be recording ten to fifteen classmates who never agreed to it. Record lectures with permission, and in the discussion rooms, write.

How do you pull four sets of notes back into one module?

The calendar does not leave room to sort this out at the end.

UCD's autumn trimester for 2026/27 runs 12 teaching weeks from 7 September to 27 November, then one revision week from 28 November to 4 December, then two weeks of exams from 5 to 19 December. The October bank holiday, 26 October 2026, falls inside the teaching block. Spring is split: teaching from 18 January to 5 March, a fieldwork and study period from 8 to 21 March, teaching again from 22 March to 23 April, one revision week, and exams from 1 to 15 May.

Other universities are close but not the same. DCU's outline calendar for 2026/27 puts semester one teaching from 7 September to 27 November, the study period from 30 November to 4 December and exams from 7 to 19 December, and DCU says its outline dates are indicative and may be subject to change. Look up your own before you plan anything, and read the shape of the Irish academic year if you want the full picture.

Either way it is one revision week between your last class and your first exam, and it has to serve every module at once. Reconciling four kinds of note in that week is not a plan.

Do it weekly instead. Twenty minutes per module, one page, four lines.

  • The lecture's argument, in three sentences. If you cannot get it to three, you did not follow it.
  • The tutorial correction you did not see coming. The one that moved the boundary of the concept.
  • The lab or seminar result that did not match what you expected. Including why you expected something else.
  • The questions you still cannot answer. Carry them forward until they are gone.

Galway's guidance on note making says notes should be "original (that is, written in your own words) and unique (that is, unlike any other student's notes)". The weekly page is the only one of your four notebooks that is automatically both, because nobody else sat through your particular combination of confusions.

Turn the unanswered questions into cards and start active recall in week three rather than in the revision week. There is a second reason to keep the page: DCU sets resits for both semesters from 26 July to 7 August the following summer. If a module goes badly in December, the notes you took in October are what you will be working from eight months later.
