Choose Goodnotes when your Windows tablet is mainly a digital exercise book: pages, prepared documents and handwritten working. Choose OneNote when you prefer a notebook organised around an existing Microsoft account and a mixture of typed and handwritten material. For either choice, the practical offline question is whether tomorrow's pages are already on the tablet.
This comparison is published by Notibo. It focuses on preparing a Windows tablet for New Zealand study, rather than claiming that one app is the most accurate or that every platform has identical features. Notibo serves a separate role when a spoken explanation needs turning into study text.
Start with the device you actually take to class
A demonstration on an iPad is not enough evidence for a Windows purchase. Open the Windows version on your own tablet, with your own pen and the documents you normally receive.
Take a sample worksheet that includes small labels and space for calculations. Write across several pages, move between the worksheet and a blank note, and reopen it. Judge whether the result is readable at the size you normally study. This proposed check is more informative than counting decorative templates.
Also distinguish using an installed notebook application from viewing a website. A successful sign-in on your laptop does not prove that your tablet has downloaded the same content. If your routine includes a shared campus computer, think about which copy you expect to use there.
What each option needs before you leave Wi-Fi
| Choice | Prepare while connected | Useful offline check | Limitation to watch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goodnotes on Windows | Open the required documents and allow preloading | Visit pages near the end as well as the first page | An online-only thumbnail or unfinished preload is not a downloaded notebook |
| Current OneNote on Windows | Open and synchronise the intended notebook | Open the actual image, printout or attachment you need | File download settings and sync errors can leave material unavailable |
| Notibo for permitted audio | Open the recording page and check the microphone | Rehearse a short recording through a connection interruption | Audio can continue locally, but transcription needs internet |
| A separate exported reference copy | Save and open the file in its intended reader | Open it with connectivity disabled | An export will not automatically include subsequent edits |
The last row is a practical fallback, not another subscription recommendation. A static copy is often enough for reading a worksheet; it is less useful when you need the latest shared edits.
Goodnotes has offline editing, with preparation
Goodnotes documents offline editing for Windows, Android and web. It supports working on available documents, including adding and editing pages. However, some operations, such as exporting a document, are unavailable offline. Do not wait until the connection disappears to discover whether a task requires the network.
Its status-icon guidance is particularly useful: an online-only document differs from one that has finished preloading. Open the material you need while connected and let that process complete. A greyed-out thumbnail is a reason to stop and prepare, not a cosmetic detail.
For a PDF-heavy paper, test a long document rather than just its cover. A notebook can appear in the library before every page is ready. Keep unsynchronised changes on the device until they have uploaded; signing out is not a sensible first response to a sync problem.
OneNote's app name can cause confusion
Microsoft's separate OneNote for Windows 10 app reached end of support on 14 October 2025. The migration guidance directs users to the current OneNote app on Windows. The operating system running on your tablet and the old application's name are not the same thing.
That distinction matters if an older tutorial tells you to find controls that no longer match. Before changing apps, make sure the existing notebook has synchronised and is present in the new one.
Microsoft describes cached notebook access offline and separately explains how file and image download settings affect local storage. Check the attachments, not just the typed page. A notebook title in a list is not proof that every large resource has arrived.
Campus access can affect the cost decision
The University of Canterbury provides Microsoft 365 account access for its students and describes OneDrive storage across devices. That is a reason to inspect your university's existing provision before paying for another storage arrangement. It is not proof that every New Zealand institution provides the same licence or every optional AI feature.
Confirm which account holds your course notebook. A personal Microsoft login and a university login can look similar once a notebook is open. Record the account and location somewhere you can find them.
If you use another institution, use its current student software instructions. Avoid choosing a paid notebook solely because an old comparison assumes you must buy Microsoft access separately.
A sample week with a Windows tablet
Imagine a student taking lecture slides into class, completing a handwritten problem sheet on campus and revisiting both during a journey home. This is an illustrative routine, not a reported student outcome.
Goodnotes may suit that student if each week's material feels like a set of pages to mark up. OneNote may suit them if they want a notebook section combining their own text, working and supporting files. Neither preference proves that the other application is inferior.
The useful trial is to prepare the same small pack in both. After a brief disconnected session, reconnect and inspect the result on a second device. Look for missing pages, incomplete attachments and edits that have not appeared. Do not delete the original pack until you know which version contains your work.
Keep audio and visual meaning together
A lecturer might say “this changes the sign” while pointing at an equation. Audio alone does not tell you which symbol they indicated. Write a short cue beside the relevant line, or retain the authorised visual material.
Notibo can provide a transcript and organised notes from permitted audio, followed by flashcards. You can export text as PDF or Word, but there is no native OneNote or Goodnotes synchronisation. Moving checked text into your notebook is a separate action.
That separation can be useful: the visual notebook keeps your reasoning and diagrams; the audio-derived note fills a verbal gap. It becomes unhelpful if you spend more time copying between applications than checking your understanding. See notes for NZ lectures, tutorials and labs for deciding what deserves its own record.
An offline notebook is not an offline AI service
In Notibo, a microphone recording already under way can continue when internet drops, and upload resumes when it returns. Keep the page open and the device awake. A suspended browser or interrupted microphone can still stop capture.
The eventual transcription uses one main language. Automatic language detection does not guarantee reliable switching between languages, and AI study notes require a connection. Save a local audio copy if you want an archive after processing; Notibo normally removes server audio after successful processing.
For comparison, test the notebook's page availability and the recorder's audio continuity separately. They answer different questions, even if both products advertise an offline capability.
Spend only after the practical check
Choose the notebook that makes your own working easy to retrieve. Keep the existing university option if it already does that reliably. Add an audio study tool only when it solves a separate problem.
Notibo offers a 14-day Pro trial with 240 minutes and no card. It does not begin charging automatically at the end; paid access is a later choice. You can use a short permitted sample to decide whether the resulting notes justify another place to organise material.
Our New Zealand note-app overview covers broader options, while the study-year planning guide helps organise the material you keep.
