Short answer first: the New Zealand university year is the calendar year, split into two semesters at six universities and into trimesters at the University of Waikato and Te Herenga Waka Victoria University of Wellington, with a summer period from November or January. A full-time year is 120 points at Auckland and Victoria and 120 credits at Massey. Teaching ends on 16 October 2026 at Otago, Canterbury, Massey and Lincoln, and Waikato's Trimester B the same day; exams open between 16 and 29 October. The 2027 year starts on 22 February or 1 March. Refund deadlines fall within the first three weeks, so the plan has to exist before then.
This article covers the shape of the year, the dates that still matter in 2026, the published 2027 dates, the add and withdraw deadlines, the workload a paper stands for, work rules, and a weekly plan for a full-time load. Every date is written as the university's own page prints it, and where none is published, the article says so.
How is the New Zealand university year built?
Eight universities, two vocabularies. Six run two semesters and a summer period; Waikato and Victoria call their three periods trimesters, with the third over summer. A study plan has to fit the calendar you are actually on, and the summer period is a teaching period at every university, not a holiday.
- Massey states the shape plainly. Its key dates page says the year is split into Semester One, Semester Two and Summer School, each with an exam period at the end.
- Waikato runs Trimester A, B and C. Its key university dates put Trimester B examinations from Tuesday 27 October to Friday 6 November 2026, Trimester C starting on Monday 16 November, and Trimester A 2027 starting on Monday 1 March.
- Victoria runs three trimesters of its own. The 2026 academic year chart shows Trimester 2 ending on 8 November, the summer trimester starting in the week beginning 16 November, a pause over the Christmas closure, and Trimester 1 2027 starting in the week beginning 22 February.
- Summer School starts before Christmas at most universities. Canterbury's key university dates put Summer School lectures from 9 November 2026. Otago's academic key dates show a Pre-Christmas Summer School from Monday, 9 November and a Summer School from Monday, 11 January 2027. Auckland's Summer School 2027 begins on Wed 6 Jan.
So the year you plan is two teaching blocks of about twelve weeks, each with a two- or three-week break in the middle, a short study break and an exam period. A summer paper adds a third block.
What are the key dates for the rest of 2026?
Semester 2 is in its last teaching weeks. Each university has published its exam period, most print the end of teaching and the study break, and a few a results date. Dates are shown as printed, with the weekday where the page gives one.
| University | Teaching ends | Study break | Exams | Results |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland | Lectures end Friday 23 October 2026 | Study break begins Tuesday 27 October 2026 | Thursday 29 October to Monday 16 November 2026 | Not printed |
| Victoria (Te Herenga Waka) | Week 12 is the week beginning 5 October | Study and assessment period from the week beginning 12 October | Assessment period starts Friday 16 Oct, ends Sat 7 Nov; Trimester 2 ends 8 Nov | Not printed |
| Otago | Lectures end Friday, 16 October | None named | Semester 2 examinations Monday, 19 October to Saturday, 7 November | Not printed on the dates page |
| Canterbury | Lectures end 16 October | Study break 19 to 25 October | Examination period 27 October to 7 November | Release of results 30 November |
| Massey | Final day of lectures 16 October | Study period 19 to 23 October | Exam period start 27 October; exam period and semester end 9 November | 1 December (approximately) |
| Waikato | Final teaching day of Trimester B Friday 16 October | Study week begins Monday 19 October | Trimester B examinations Tuesday 27 October to Friday 6 November | Not printed on the dates page |
| AUT | Not printed separately | Study and assessment weeks 19 October to 6 November | Within those weeks | Unconfirmed results usually within two weeks of the end of semester |
| Lincoln | Semester 2 classes end Friday 16 October | Study break Monday 19 to Friday 23 October | Semester 2 examinations Tuesday 27 October to Friday 6 November | Semester 2 results released Friday 20 November |
Labour Day is Monday 26 October 2026; four universities start exams on the Tuesday after it, and the Auckland important dates page has its study break beginning that Tuesday. Lincoln's 2026 academic key dates add that the final exam schedule is published about halfway through the semester and that students are expected to be available for exams until the last day of it.
AUT's semester dates page prints only the block of study and assessment weeks; your faculty or school holds the exam date.
Which 2027 dates are already published?
All eight universities have published 2027 dates; Victoria's are on its 2027 academic year chart, in the same week-by-week form as 2026. Each date is as the university's own page prints it, not derived from a pattern.
| University | Orientation | Teaching starts | Break | First exam period |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Auckland | Not printed | Semester 1 begins Mon 1 Mar | Mon 12 Apr to Fri 23 Apr | Exams begin Thu 10 Jun, end Mon 28 Jun |
| Victoria (Te Herenga Waka) | Orientation Week, week beginning 15 February | Trimester 1 2027 starts, week beginning 22 February | Mid-Trimester break, weeks beginning 29 March and 5 April | Assessment period starts 4 Jun, ends 19 Jun; Trimester 1 ends 20 Jun |
| Otago | Preliminary lectures Friday, 26 February | Formal lectures begin Monday, 1 March | Begins Friday, 26 March; semester 1 resumes Monday, 12 April | Wednesday, 9 June to Wednesday, 23 June |
| Canterbury | Not printed | Lectures start 22 February | 26 March to 16 April | 14 to 26 June, results 12 July |
| Massey | Orientation Week 15 to 19 February | Semester and lectures start 22 February | Mid-semester study period 26 March to 9 April | Exam period 5 June to 19 June, results approximately 2 July |
| Waikato | Enrolment and O week begins Monday 22 February | Trimester A begins Monday 1 March | Teaching recess begins Monday 19 April; Trimester A resumes Monday 3 May | Monday 14 June to Thursday 24 June |
| AUT | Orientation week 15 February | First day of classes 22 February | 5 to 16 April | Study and assessment weeks 31 May to 18 June |
| Lincoln | Preparation Week Tuesday 16 to Tuesday 23 February | Semester 1 starts Monday 22 February | Monday 29 March to Friday 16 April | Monday 14 to Saturday 26 June, results Wednesday 14 July |
Easter sets the break at Otago, Canterbury, Massey and Lincoln, which all pause on Good Friday, 26 March 2027, and at Victoria, whose two weeks begin on Easter Monday. Auckland's 2027 teaching days chart sits apart, with its break from 12 to 23 April and a note that exams are scheduled Monday to Saturday. Canterbury's page says listed dates are subject to change and AUT's says it may amend individual dates, so check again in January.
When is the last day to add, drop or withdraw from a paper?
This is where first-year money goes missing. Each of the seven universities below prints a point after which a dropped paper is not refunded, and most a later date for withdrawing without one. The names and the consequences differ.
| University | Its name for the refund point | 2026 and 2027 dates as printed |
|---|---|---|
| Auckland | Deadline for deleting courses with refund of fees | Semester Two courses: add and delete with refund by 31 July 2026; withdraw or substitute by 2 October 2026 |
| Otago | Last day to delete papers with refund of fees | Semester 1 2027: add by Sunday, 7 March; delete with refund by Sunday, 21 March; withdraw by Sunday, 9 May. Semester 2 2027: Sunday, 1 August for the refund |
| Canterbury | Deadline for adding or dropping courses with a refund | Semester Two 2026: deadline to drop without a refund 27 September. 2027: with a refund by 7 March for S1 and 1 August for S2 |
| Lincoln | Deadline to withdraw (with refund) | Semester 1 2027: enrol or change by Monday 1 March; withdraw with refund by Friday 12 March. Semester 2 2027: Monday 26 July and Friday 6 August |
| Massey | Withdrawal date on your Confirmation of Enrolment | Refund of tuition fees only if you withdraw before 17 per cent of the study period has passed; academic penalty after 75 per cent |
| Waikato | Withdrawn Full Refund (WDFR) | Full refund at any time during the first two weeks; withdraw up to six weeks from the start, usually without refund |
| Victoria (Te Herenga Waka) | Course changes deadline | Set at the beginning of each trimester; the exact dates load on the key dates page and drop off once they pass |
- Auckland's withdrawal date for Semester Two is still ahead. The 2026 enrolment dates give 2 October 2026 for withdrawing from Semester Two courses. The withdrawing from a course page says the course stays on your record as a W, with no refund, and does not count in your GPA.
- Massey works in percentages. Its changing or withdrawing from study page says each course has its own withdrawal date tied to its start date, printed on your Confirmation of Enrolment, and that a withdrawal after 75 per cent of the study period is recorded as DC, did not complete.
- Waikato counts weeks from the paper's start. The withdrawals page says a WD is not a failing grade, that a withdrawal more than six weeks in becomes an IC, which is, and that not turning up withdraws you from nothing.
- Victoria ties the deadline to StudyLink. Its course additions and withdrawals page says a late withdrawal shows as WD, and that StudyLink treats a withdrawn grade as a fail when it works out future loan entitlement.
The practical rule: decide about every paper in the first two weeks, when you have seen the course outline and the assessment weights and are still inside every refund window listed. After it, dropping a paper costs the fee and usually a line on your record. What a withdrawal does to the grade record is covered in the exam article.
How many hours is a full-time load?
Otago and Waikato call the unit a paper and the other six call it a course; when this article means both at once it says paper. Three universities say what a point is worth in hours and Auckland says how many courses make a year, which gives you a number to plan against instead of a feeling.
- Victoria puts a 15-point course at 150 hours. Its how degrees work page says a 15-point course normally requires 150 hours including class time and independent study, and a three-year degree 360 points at 120 a year.
- Otago puts one point at 10 hours. Its workload page says a full-time load is 54 to 72 points a semester or 108 to 144 a year, and that an 18-point paper usually works out to a minimum of 14 hours a week across contact time and independent study.
- Massey gives it per week. The recommended workloads page recommends four courses of 60 credits a semester, eight of 120 credits a year, and says a 15-credit single-semester course typically needs 10 to 12.5 hours of study each week.
- Auckland sets the first-year load at eight courses. Its how many courses page says the recommended first-year workload is 120 points, in most programmes eight 15-point courses, with a minimum of 100 points over two semesters to count as full-time.
The arithmetic from there is ours: four 15-point papers at 150 hours each, Victoria's figure, is 600 hours, roughly 40 hours a week over fifteen weeks, and four times Massey's weekly figure gives 40 to 50. Contact hours are the smaller part: three lectures and a tutorial is four hours in a room, which leaves roughly six to nine of Massey's weekly hours outside it. That gap is the whole reason the move from NCEA feels different.
Can you work while you study?
Two bodies set the limits: Immigration New Zealand for visa holders and StudyLink for domestic students on an allowance. Both were read on 22 September 2026.
- Up to 25 hours a week for eligible visa holders. Immigration New Zealand's working on a student visa page says you may be allowed to work part-time for up to 25 hours a week, and full-time in scheduled breaks if your programme is at least one academic year, worth at least 120 credits and taught over at least two semesters in eight months. Your own eVisa conditions decide, and international students cannot be self-employed.
- $284.70 a week before the allowance drops. StudyLink's income page says your income can be up to $284.70 a week before tax before it affects your Student Allowance, and that above that the weekly rate reduces cent for cent. You declare the income by the Sunday of the week you earn it, not the week you are paid.
Treat paid hours as fixed blocks like lectures: ten hours on a 40-hour study week is a 50-hour week. If you can move shifts, move them out of the two weeks before exams and into the breaks.
How do you plan a teaching week around a full-time load?
The unit of planning is the paper, not the day. Four papers need four short routines that repeat every week, built once in week one and then adjusted.
Week 1 to 2: set the frame
- Print the timetable and mark the fixed things per paper: lectures, tutorial or lab, due dates from the course outline, and the exam period.
- Give each paper two blocks a week outside class: one for the reading or problem set before the tutorial, one for a retrieval session on last week's material. Two blocks of three hours, plus the class time, brings it to the 10 to 12.5 hours a week Massey describes.
- Decide on every paper before the refund deadline. At Otago in 2027 that is Sunday, 21 March for semester 1; at Auckland the adding date and the deleting-with-refund date fall on the same day for single-semester courses.
- Apply now for anything slow to arrange: alternative exam arrangements, a learning support plan, or a StudyLink change.
Week 3 to the mid-semester break
The pattern repeats every week, and the retrieval block is the one that gets dropped first, so protect it. Each Friday, close the week for each paper with fifteen minutes of questions written from the week's lectures, then answer them from memory on Monday before the next lecture. Weekly is enough during teaching; the spaced repetition schedule article explains the longer intervals.
The mid-semester break is two weeks at most universities: Monday 31 August to Friday 11 September at Auckland this year, 24 August to 4 September at Massey, AUT and Lincoln. Use the first week for the assessment due after the break and the second to bring every paper's notes up to date.
The last teaching weeks
Assessments tend to cluster in the last teaching weeks, and the exam timetable arrives around then. Lincoln publishes its final exam schedule about halfway through the semester. Canterbury's exam dates page says the End-of-Year 2026 preliminary timetable went out the weekend of 15 August and the final personal timetable follows the weekend of 17 October. Once you have it, write the exam dates into the plan and work backwards.
How does the week change in the study break?
The study break is short. Canterbury and Lincoln give a week, 19 to 25 October and Monday 19 to Friday 23 October 2026. Massey gives 19 to 23 October. Auckland gives two days from Tuesday 27 October before exams start on Thursday. Otago gives no named break: lectures end on Friday, 16 October and examinations begin on Monday, 19 October. Waikato has a study week from Monday 19 October.
- The exam period is longer than the break. Auckland's runs to Monday 16 November, Otago's to Saturday, 7 November, and Canterbury's to Saturday 7 November, which its exam dates page names as an exam day. Your last exam may be nearly three weeks after your first, and the gap is study time too.
- One paper's exam can fall on the first day. Otago's examinations begin on the Monday after lectures end on the Friday, and Victoria's chart labels the week beginning 12 October as the study and assessment period with the assessment period starting on Friday 16 Oct. Revision for a paper examined that early has to be finished during teaching.
So the break plan is not "revise everything". Rank the papers by exam date, finish the earliest first, and keep the retrieval habit for the others running at a lower rate. The block changes too: in teaching it was fifteen minutes, in the break it is the main work, a past paper or a set of written questions answered closed-book and marked against the notes. Reading notes again feels like revision and is not.
With four exams across three weeks, three focused days per paper in date order is realistic; if two fall on adjacent days, split the last week between them from the start. If illness lands in this window, every university checked has an aegrotat or special consideration process, most with a deadline measured in days.
Where Notibo fits
The weekly retrieval block needs material to retrieve from, and the fastest way to have it is to record the lecture on your computer where your university and lecturer permit it. Notibo returns a transcript, structured notes and flashcards with spaced repetition from a recording or an uploaded audio file, and turns a PDF of lecture slides into notes and flashcards too. On the lecture recording side, one recording can run up to two hours, uploads are capped at 50 MB, and transcription works in 89 languages.
You get Pro free for 14 days, with 240 minutes of recording, and no card is asked for. After those 14 days the free plan gives 30 minutes of recording a month, part of one lecture. Pro is 9.99 euro a month or 88.99 euro a year, shown in your local currency at checkout. Files are stored in the EU on Supabase in Frankfurt; transcription and note generation run on US processors under standard contractual clauses, and the audio file is deleted from storage once the transcript and notes exist. Recording other people needs their permission, and a clinical placement is never the place to record.
