A useful UK university study plan starts with your course calendar. The largest difference is often when the first assessments happen: January exams leave work to plan across the winter vacation, while December exams require earlier preparation during teaching.
The 2026/27 examples below were checked on 11 October 2026. They describe standard university calendars, with programme exceptions. Your individual assessment timetable, module handbook and school instructions take precedence for the work you must attend or submit.
Put teaching and assessment dates on the same page

These ranges do not tell you the date of your own exam. Keep the whole relevant assessment period available until your timetable is confirmed. Add coursework deadlines separately: they can fall during teaching or preparation weeks.
If your exams are in January
Leeds’ autumn teaching ends on 11 December 2026, followed by its January assessments. Manchester lists a Christmas break from 21 December to 13 January before its first assessment period. A university closure is a narrower concept than a teaching vacation; neither automatically tells you when coursework is due.
Before leaving campus, save permitted revision material and identify what you will practise. For each module, note the assessment format, topics you find difficult and a small set of questions to attempt. Plan around travel, paid work and family commitments, including time off. Do not leave the first diagnosis of your gaps until the week before the exam.
If your exams are in December
Edinburgh’s teaching block ends on 4 December, with 7 and 8 December labelled revision days. Bristol’s assessment preparation week is 7 to 11 December, and most students have no regular teaching then, although other course activities can remain.
In a short gap, preparation depends on work done earlier. During teaching, revisit an old topic each week and test whether you can explain or apply it. Use the final days to work on known weaknesses and exam technique. Our UK exam-preparation guide helps connect that practice to the assessment.
Oxford and Cambridge use Full Term
Both universities distinguish the principal undergraduate teaching period, Full Term, from the wider term. The dates below are Full Term dates, not a complete statement of when every student must be present.

Oxford describes eight-week Full Terms and also publishes extended schedules for some courses. Cambridge notes that postgraduate academic activity continues throughout the year. Check your college’s arrival instructions and your department’s deadlines rather than booking travel from this table alone.
For planning, separate weekly tutorial or supervision preparation from longer reading and project tasks. Ask which tasks are expected during the vacation. There is no sound basis for a universal rule that an Oxford or Cambridge student can afford only one week off: the course, workload and personal circumstances matter.
Scotland is not a single timetable
St Andrews begins teaching earlier than the other examples in the first table, but Bristol begins on the same day as Edinburgh and Glasgow. Country alone will not predict your dates.
Second-semester exams at Edinburgh and Glasgow are scheduled for 26 April to 21 May 2027. Leeds lists 17 May to 4 June and Manchester 17 May to 9 June. That difference matters if you share accommodation or work shifts with students elsewhere: their revision period may begin when your assessments are already under way.
St Andrews lists second-semester examinations in the weeks beginning 10 and 17 May, followed by an extended examination diet in the weeks beginning 24 and 31 May. An extended diet is not interchangeable with a resit period, and a week-commencing entry is not an exact final examination date.
Use the break your programme actually provides
Bristol lists consolidation weeks on 26 to 30 October 2026 and 22 to 26 February 2027. Edinburgh’s Flexible Learning Week is 15 to 19 February. St Andrews has Independent Learning Weeks beginning 19 October and 5 April. Check your school’s activities within these periods.
Choose review tasks by what they unblock. If an upcoming essay depends on a theory you cannot explain, resolve that before polishing notes on topics you already understand. If a calculation keeps failing, work through a fresh example and identify the first incorrect step.
You do not need to build all your flashcards in one break or ignore every stronger module. Use a little continuing practice for material you want to retain, and reserve more time for urgent gaps. Include rest. If your university has no reading week, continue attending scheduled teaching and fit smaller blocks around it.
Plan for projects beyond the teaching dates
Find the dissertation or project deadline in your current course guidance. Some universities publish central deadlines; others rely on programme handbooks. Do not assume every final-year project is due before the main exams, or that a taught master’s follows the undergraduate summer vacation.
For example, Edinburgh explicitly says most postgraduate taught students undertake a dissertation or research project during the summer teaching vacation. See our one-year master’s guide for planning that period. An Open University module can also follow its own calendar.
Once you know the deadline, reserve time for feedback, revisions and any approvals. A useful project plan names an output for each stage: a question agreed with your supervisor, a source list, an analysis, a draft section. “Work on dissertation” is harder to schedule or assess.
Keep reassessment dates available where necessary
Manchester now lists resits on 16 to 27 August 2027. Bristol lists reassessment on 20 to 30 July, and Glasgow on 26 July to 13 August. Edinburgh’s main calendar still marks its resit dates to be confirmed. Use the linked university page for current details.
Eligibility, registration and individual arrangements are separate from these windows. If an assessment may need repeating, speak to your school when results and decisions are available. Do not wait until August, but do not assume that you can choose a resit yourself either.
Turn the calendar into a realistic week
Start with teaching, commuting, employment and caring commitments. Add assignment stages and short review sessions to the remaining time, keeping some space for changes. Our guide to working while studying explains why work permission and university workload guidance are separate questions.
At the end of each week, check one outcome in each module: can you answer a representative question, explain an argument or complete the next practical task? Use that evidence to adjust the next study schedule. You can repair gaps throughout a term; there is no universal “last cheap week” after which catching up becomes impossible.
