Short answer first: honours in Australia is a year of supervised research plus advanced coursework at AQF level 8, in two shapes. Either it is appended after a three year bachelor degree, as at Sydney, or built into a four year program, as in UNSW engineering. ANU's Bachelor of Science (Honours) is 48 units in one year. Entry is set school by school: Sydney Science asks for a WAM of at least 65 in the subject area, ANU Science the equivalent of an ANU 70 per cent. You write a thesis and are graded in classes, and the class is what research degrees and scholarships are written in.
Every threshold below is quoted from the university that sets it, and the numbers move between universities and between schools inside one university. Take the shape of the year from this article and the numbers from your own school's honours page.
What is an honours year in Australia?
It is a research apprenticeship with a deadline. You take a supervisor, you take a question, and you spend most of a year turning it into a thesis while you sit a small amount of advanced coursework beside it. Marks are the gate, so if you are still working out how your average is built, start with how Australian universities assess you.
- It comes appended, embedded or integrated. The University of Sydney separates the three. Appended honours is an additional qualification completed after the undergraduate degree is finished. Embedded honours means you complete your honours study during your current undergraduate degree by taking specific units. Integrated honours is a course where every student completes and is awarded honours, with the class based on a specified weighted average mark, and Sydney's example is its Bachelor of Engineering Honours.
- A full year is the standard size. ANU's Bachelor of Science (Honours) is 48 units of one year full time. Sydney's 2026 course resolutions for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) require at least 12 credit points of coursework and 24 to 36 credit points of research project, taken full time over two consecutive semesters or, with permission, part time over four.
- When honours is built into the degree, everyone gets the award and not everyone gets a class. The UNSW rules for the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) say every student who completes the program receives the award, and that those who reach the performance level also receive an award with a class of honours.
- The level is AQF 8. UQ's Bachelor Honours Degree Procedure says academic merit in AQF level 8 bachelor's honours degree qualifications is recognised through the award of a class of honours.
The practical difference is timing. When honours is built into the degree, the thesis arrives in the final year whether you asked for it or not. In an appended year you apply, and the application has a date on it months before the year starts.
Who gets in, and what mark do you need?
The school decides, and the number is local. Sydney's honours eligibility page puts the typical minimum WAM at 65 to 75 per cent depending on the type of honours, and says entry is competitive, places depend on supervisors being available, and meeting the criteria does not guarantee a place. The only threshold that applies to you is the one on your own school's page, and it is a floor.
| University and program | The mark asked for | The other condition |
|---|---|---|
| ANU, Bachelor of Science (Honours) | A weighted average mark equivalent to an ANU 70 per cent, from the 36 units of cognate courses excluding 1000-level | An AQF level 7 degree completed within the last two years, plus supervisory capacity |
| Sydney, Bachelor of Science (Honours) | A WAM of at least 65 in the proposed honours subject area, or a credit average in 48 credit points of 2000-level and above units relevant to it | A completed BSc with a major or program in the subject area, plus any requirement set by the department, school or faculty |
| UNSW, Physics honours | A WAM of 65 per cent or above in physics and maths courses | A physics major and at least 24 UOC of level 3 physics courses |
| Monash, Law honours thesis | An average of 72 per cent or better across your law units at Monash | No more than 72 credit points remaining in the law requirements |
Two conditions in that table are easy to miss. ANU's College of Arts and Social Sciences points at section 17(3) of the Coursework Awards Rule 2024, which requires a person admitted to a one year honours program to enrol within two years after completing the pass degree, unless a longer period is approved. And supervision is a capacity limit, not a formality: ANU says admission is subject to supervisory capacity and approval from the relevant delegated authority in the academic college.
Getting a supervisor before you apply
- Read the school's research pages and pick three academics whose work you could stand to read all year. UNSW's School of Physics asks applicants to nominate three supervisor choices, and confirms projects and supervisors itself.
- Email them with a paragraph on what you want to work on. ANU's College of Arts and Social Sciences asks for a proposed thesis topic of at most 50 words on its supervisor confirmation form, which is a useful length for the first email too.
- Ask what they would actually supervise. A topic a supervisor already has data or fieldwork access for is a shorter year than one they have to build from nothing.
- Get the agreement in writing before the closing date. Monash Law tells students to contact a staff member who will agree to supervise them before applying, then develop a research proposal for the Director of the Honours Program once accepted.
What is the honours year made of?
Coursework and a thesis, in a ratio the school sets. The coursework is not first year filler. Sydney describes honours coursework units as covering research design, ethical skills, communication skills and technical training, which is the toolkit the thesis then uses.
- Half and half, at UNSW Physics. The School of Physics says coursework and research each contribute 50 per cent to the final honours grade. Inside the research half the research proposal is worth 10 per cent, the thesis 90 per cent, and the literature review is a hurdle task. Every student also gives a ten minute talk about their research.
- A word count, at Monash Law. In LAW4327 Honours thesis you write an 8,000 to 10,000 word thesis under supervision, attend three seminars through the year, and present your findings at the Annual Honours Conference.
- Named research units, at UQ. The Bachelor Honours Degree Procedure requires faculties to identify the four units that provide research or research preparation among the courses that contribute to honours.
- A research project with a floor and a ceiling, at Sydney. The 2026 resolutions for the Bachelor of Science (Honours) set the research project at 24 to 36 credit points and the coursework at a minimum of 12, with the honours subject areas listed in Table A for the Bachelor of Science, so the year narrows to one subject area even if your degree was broad.
Read the assessment weightings in week one and plan against them. A literature review that is only a hurdle still has to be passed, and a proposal worth 10 per cent early in the year is the cheapest ten marks of the year.
Do you need ethics approval for your project?
If your project involves people or their data, yes, and the approval has to come before the work does. UQ's Human Research Ethics Procedure applies to all staff, students and title holders who conduct, or assist with the conduct of, human research at or on behalf of UQ. It requires written ethics approval before a project involving human research commences, and it is read together with the National Statement on Ethical Conduct in Human Research.
That single rule reshapes an honours timeline. UQ's procedure covers research that involves or is about humans, their tissue or their data, and it exempts existing data only when the research is lower risk and every personal identifier has been removed. Its committees hold scheduled meetings rather than a queue you can jump. Ask your supervisor in the first fortnight which review body your project goes to, whether it counts as lower risk research that a Lower Risk Panel can review, and what the next few submission dates are. Work that is not about people, their tissue or their data, which covers a lot of lab, computational and modelling projects, sits outside the procedure, which is one honest reason a supervisor may steer a first project that way.
How is honours graded, and what do the classes mean?
In classes, from first to third, calculated in a way each university publishes. The names look similar. The arithmetic behind them is not the same, so never carry a threshold from one university to another.
| University and program | Top class | Second class | Calculated from |
|---|---|---|---|
| UQ, bachelor honours degrees | Class I at a GPA of 6.200 to 7.000 | Class IIA 5.650 to 6.199, class IIB 5.000 to 5.649 | 16 units of courses at level 3 or higher, of which at least 12 are graded, taken at UQ |
| UNSW, Physics honours | Class 1 at a WAM of 85 or greater | Class 2 Division 1 from 75 to 84, Division 2 from 65 to 74 | The honours WAM, half coursework and half research |
| UNSW, Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) | Class 1 at an honours WAM of at least 80 and a thesis course mark of at least 65 | Class 2 Division 1 at WAM 75, Division 2 at WAM 65, both with a thesis mark of at least 65 | The honours WAM across the program, weighted by course level, plus the thesis mark |
UQ's procedure also awards class IIIA from 4.000 to 4.999 and class IIIB below 4.000, and says only courses taken at UQ count towards the calculation. UNSW Physics puts Class 3 below a WAM of 65.
The engineering rule is the one to read twice if honours is built into your degree. Two numbers have to clear at once, and a strong coursework average with a thesis mark of 64 does not produce a class. The thesis project is weighted as at least a 12 UOC level 4 course, so it also moves the WAM it has to clear.
What is an honours class worth afterwards?
Mostly it is a key to research degrees and to the money attached to them. ANU's College of Arts and Social Sciences puts it plainly: a bachelor degree with honours is "the most effective means of qualifying for higher degrees (PhD or MPhil) in the future".
- PhD entry is written in honours classes. Monash's academic entry requirements for graduate research set standard PhD entry at a bachelor's degree of at least four years including a research thesis or project, with a minimum overall average grade of an honours degree equivalent to Second Class Honours Division A. A masters by research asks for Division B with a mark of 65 or above.
- Scholarships ask for first class. Griffith's page for the Australian Government Research Training Program says an applicant must hold a bachelor degree with first-class honours, or a masters degree incorporating a significant research component, or a qualification the Dean of the Graduate Research School deems comparable. The full time stipend is 35,656 Australian dollars a year at the 2026 rate, for up to three years in a doctoral program.
- It is evidence for jobs that want research. Monash Law says an honours thesis demonstrates your capacity for research, an admission criterion for a graduate research degree, and may help with roles such as a judge's associate.
If none of those is your plan, honours is a year of your life for a line on a transcript. That is a real answer, and plenty of graduates give it.
How do you plan the thesis month by month?
Around one fixed date. ANU's College of Arts and Social Sciences publishes its 2026 honours thesis due dates as 5:00PM, Monday 18 May 2026 for Semester 1 and 5:00PM, Monday 19 October 2026 for Semester 2, so a student in the current semester has that Monday in October and nothing else to negotiate with. Work backwards from your own school's date.
| Stage | What you do | What is finished by the end |
|---|---|---|
| Before you enrol | Contact supervisors, agree a topic, meet the application date | Supervision confirmed in writing |
| Months 1 and 2 | Reading, method, the proposal, and the ethics application if you need one | A proposal your supervisor has signed off |
| Months 3 and 4 | Data collection, fieldwork, lab work or archive work, and the literature review | The literature review done and a first data set |
| Months 5 and 6 | Analysis, and a full draft of the results chapter | Results written up in rough |
| Month 7 | The rest of the draft, top to bottom, ugly but complete | A complete draft with the supervisor |
| Month 8 | Revision on their comments, then formatting, references and appendices | Submitted, several days early |
The coursework runs the whole way through that table and it is what slips first. Keep it to a fixed weekly slot and use retrieval rather than rereading, which is the case made in active recall. Reading is the other half. Honours reading is heavy and mostly PDFs, so summarise each paper the day you read it, in the form described in effective note taking, and keep one running document of what each source actually gives your argument.
The last six weeks
- Freeze the data. New results after this point rarely change a mark and always cost a week.
- Write the methods and results sections first, because they are the most mechanical.
- Give your supervisor the full draft with enough time for a proper read, not a skim. Agree the date with them in month six.
- Book the formatting week. References, figure numbers, appendices and the title page take longer than anyone plans for.
- Submit early. Submission portals do not care why you are late, and neither does 5:00PM on the day.
What if honours is not offered, or not within reach?
There are routes that end in the same place. Some are different qualifications, and some are simply a later start.
- A masters with a research component. Monash accepts, for PhD entry, a master's degree in a relevant discipline including a research thesis or project equivalent to at least 25 per cent of one year of full-time study, at the same grade standard as the honours route.
- A research masters in place of honours. Macquarie's Master of Research is one year full time equivalent with a 20,000 word thesis, aimed at people preparing for a PhD or other doctoral research, and high performing students may be eligible for a scholarship that supports progression to a PhD.
- Equivalence by experience. Griffith allows a record or qualification granted by a professional or other body that the Dean of the Graduate Research School deems comparable to a bachelor degree with first-class honours, and Monash allows a combination of qualifications and relevant professional experience deemed equivalent by its Graduate Research Committee.
- A later application. ANU's two year window closes, and its College of Arts and Social Sciences tells students who finished more than two years ago to consider a master's degree instead.
If your average is the problem and you still have semesters left, the fix is not a better final push. It is weekly retrieval through the teaching weeks, planned against the semester you are actually in, which is the point of planning around the Australian academic year.
Where Notibo fits
An honours year is long-form reading plus a handful of meetings and seminars that carry the real instructions. Notibo records a seminar on your computer, or takes an audio file you upload, and returns a transcript, structured notes and flashcards with spaced repetition. It transcribes 89 languages, and the transcript is in the language spoken. One recording can run up to two hours, and long recordings are saved in smaller parts as they run and joined into one transcript. It also turns PDF, PPTX and DOCX files into notes and flashcards, which is the part that matters when your reading list is forty papers long, and notes can be exported as PDF or Word.
Recording a person needs their permission, and a supervision meeting is a conversation with one other human being, so ask first. Files are stored in the EU on Supabase in Frankfurt, transcription and the AI notes run on US processors under standard contractual clauses, and audio is deleted from storage once the transcript and notes are generated. The first 14 days of Pro are free, with 240 minutes of recording and no card. When the trial ends, the free plan includes 30 minutes of recording a month, and Pro is 9.99 euro a month or 88.99 euro a year, with the local amount shown at checkout. Lecture recording shows how the recording side works.
