Short answer first: the Cornell method splits your page into three sections. A wide column on the right for notes taken during the lecture, a narrow column on the left for cues and questions, and a box at the bottom for a short summary. The power is not in the layout itself, but in the fact that the method forces you to revisit your notes afterwards and turn them into questions. That is where the learning happens.
What is the Cornell method?
The method was developed at Cornell University in the 1950s and is still one of the most widely used note structures. The idea is that a note is not finished when the lecture ends. It is raw material you have to process.
The page has three sections:
- The note-taking area (the wide column on the right) is where you write during the lecture itself. Ordinary notes, ideally in short points.
- The cue column (the narrow column on the left) gets filled in afterwards. This is where you write key terms and the questions that the notes on the right answer.
- The summary box (along the bottom) is two or three lines where you write, in your own words, what the page was about overall.
How to set up the page
Draw a vertical line about a third of the way in from the left edge, and a horizontal line about five centimetres up from the bottom. That is the entire setup.
During the lecture you use only the wide column. Write in short points, avoid full sentences, and leave white space between sections.
Within a day, go back over the page. Now fill in the left column with questions, not headings. This is the most important detail in the whole method. If you write "photosynthesis" in the cue column, you have made a table of contents. If you write "what does photosynthesis convert, and what comes out?", you have made a test question. Finally, write the summary at the bottom.
A worked example
Imagine a lecture on memory. The wide column says something like:
Short-term memory: approx. 7 items, decays after approx. 20 sec without rehearsal. Long-term memory: unlimited capacity. Transfer requires processing, not repetition alone. Deep processing (meaning) stores better than shallow (sound, appearance).
The next day you fill in the cue column with questions:
How much does short-term memory hold, and for how long? What does it take to move something into long-term memory? What is the difference between deep and shallow processing?
And at the bottom you write the summary:
Memory is not one system. Short-term memory is small and brief, and material only moves into long-term memory by being processed for meaning, not by repetition on its own.
Now you can cover the wide column and use the questions as a test. That is the whole point.
Why it works
The method works because it builds active recall directly into your notes. When you cover the notes and answer your own questions, you are retrieving the answer from memory instead of rereading it. That is one of the best evidenced learning methods we have.
The summary does something similar. Having to boil a full page down to three lines in your own words quickly reveals whether you actually understood it or just wrote it down.
Combine the questions from your cue column with spaced repetition and you effectively have a set of flashcards you can practise across the whole term, instead of relearning everything the week before the exam.
Where the method falls short
The Cornell method has two real weaknesses, and they are worth knowing up front.
The first is that it does not help you during the lecture itself. You are still taking ordinary notes in the right-hand column, and if the lecturer is moving too fast, they are still moving too fast. The method addresses the problem of keeping up in a lecture by shifting the work to afterwards, not by removing it.
The second is that the processing step actually has to happen. A Cornell page where the cue column and summary never got filled in is just an ordinary note with a lot of wasted space. Studies of the method consistently point to the processing as the source of the benefit, not the template. If you drop off at that step, you are better served by a simpler structure. The honest problem with the Cornell method is time. You have to take the notes, and then spend twenty minutes per lecture rewriting them into questions and a summary. That is exactly the step people skip once the week gets busy.
